What Should I Wear For My Headshot?
This is always one of the most common questions that people ask. The short answer is, wear what you love! If you love what you are wearing then that enthusiasm will show through in your headshots. If you don’t love the outfit or aren’t sure about it, then that will also show through in your headshots. It is a subconscious thing going on with what we are wearing as we get in front of the camera. I also like to tell people that if you aren’t sure about the outfit just bring it anyway, it is better to have it in the studio and not need it, then wish you had it while you were here. I recommend bringing in 4-6 outfits for us to go over and discuss. You can always ask your professional photographer for any tips too!
Here are a few general guidelines to follow, keep in mind all of these will not apply to all people.
AVOID BOLD PRINTS
The focus of a headshot should be you. Bold prints can distract people as they are viewing your headshots and put the focus on your outfit instead of you.
WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT
The best way to look good in your headshot is to wear clothes that fit! Everyone wants to look thin in their headshot, the easiest way to look bigger is to wear clothes that are to big or have large shoulder pads.
DRESS FOR YOUR INDUSTRY
If it is standard for your industry to wear a suit, wear a suit to your headshot. If your industry is more relaxed and business casual is the expected norm then I recommend that we skip the tie!
AVOID DISTRACTING JEWELRY
Just like bold prints, Jewelry can really take away from your headshot. If Jewelry is a part of your brand, then I recommend you keep it to a minimum of stud earrings or a structured necklace like pearls. Be sure to make sure the necklace isn’t too long that it intersects with the neckline of your top.
SOLID MUTED TONES WORK BEST
If you are not sure what to wear, then your default should be black or grey. They are timeless and will always look good in a headshot.
